Skin Resurfacing and Rejuvenation Q & A

What is laser skin resurfacing and rejuvenation?

Laser treatments for a smoother, rejuvenated complexion are nonsurgical, quick, and effective. They target only the melanin in dark spots – called pigmented lesions – and visible blood vessels. The treatment doesn’t harm your skin, but provides visible clinical improvements in your complexion.

What skin complaints can skin resurfacing and skin rejuvenation address?

Most people have one or more pigmented lesions. These are caused by sun exposure or are a natural effect of aging. They’re locations where the pigment-containing compounds in your skin, called melanin, concentrate. Lesions may be flat or raised and should be checked to ensure they’re not a sign of skin cancer. If they’re benign, laser skin resurfacing erases them by targeting the concentrations of melanin.

Other issues that can be treated with laser skin resurfacing include:

  • Rosacea redness
  • Angiomas
  • Port wine stains
  • Hemangioma
  • Venous malformation
  • Pigment treatments
  • Uneven texture
  • Spider veins
  • Warts & skin tag removal
  • Scars & stretch marks

At the Laser Center of Milford, the practitioners use the Alma Harmony®XL – DYE VL laser to resurface and rejuvenate your complexion.

How does laser energy resurface and rejuvenate the skin?

The Dye-VL treatment is an accelerated Advanced Fluorescence Technology (AFT) Photofacial. It delivers optimal energy right to the blood vessels, closing them off and, as a result, drastically reducing and in some cases even removing the appearance of small veins from the skin. The Dye-VL treatment is a safe, targeted treatment with minimal downtime and is most commonly used on the body, face, and neck.

The DYE VL’s 500-600 nm wavelength is narrow band, allowing us to target only the melanin in the pigmented lesion or blood vessel.

The pigmented lesion is exposed to short pulses of visible light, which sharply raises the temperature in the highly concentrated melanin. The energy is just enough to shatter the cells containing the melanin. The body then replaces these cells with new, clear cells generated by the surrounding untreated area.

What results and recovery should I expect?

The DYE VL module uses Alma Laser’s proprietary IN-Motion™ protocol that helps maximize patient comfort and minimize the risk of unwanted side effects. There is very little downtime after your treatment.

While you can see the first results following your first treatment, you normally require three to five sessions about four weeks apart, to see the full results.
