Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Both Botox and Xeomin are a prescription medication injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows, crow's feet, and forehead lines by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause these wrinkles.

The injectable is in use in 96 countries and approved for cosmetic use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The effects of Botox are temporary, but effective. Repeat treatments help you maintain your look for the long-term.

Do I need to schedule downtime following Botox injections?

After your Botox injections, you can plan to go back to all your regular activities, including work, school, exercise, and daily chores.

You might be sore or a little tired after having Botox injected, but you should avoid laying down for the first four hours after the injections. Both bending and laying down could spread the toxin and lead to bruising at the injection site. You can relax, but to be safe, avoid your bed as it’s much too tempting to lay down and take a quick nap! Set a timer on your phone so you don’t forget. Once it goes off, you can lay down (make sure it’s on your back if you had injections put in your face) and relax the way that you want to.

When do I see the results of Botox?

Once injected, the Botox takes about three hours to get down to the relevant muscles. You notice a start to smoothing in 24-48 hours with full results apparent in seven days.

How long do the results of Botox last?

You maintain results for 3-4 months, depending on the area treated and your muscles’ reaction. You can schedule repeat injections regularly to maintain your new, smoother look. The team at Laser Center of Milford can put you on a treatment schedule.

Do Botox injections hurt?

The team at Laser Center of Milford use a fine needle to apply Botox injections at multiple points on your face. You do feel a pinch during the injection, but each one is brief and the sensation is minimal. Most people tolerate the treatment quite well.

You experience no lingering sensation after treatment; discomfort is limited to the few seconds of the injection. If you’re concerned about sensation, talk to the providers about using a topical numbing cream or ice prior to treatment.
